Every app calls itself "educational" — but is it?

Let us be honest: choosing apps for children is difficult. The app stores are full of apps that promise to turn your child into a genius, but beneath the colourful surface, many of them are simply glorified entertainment — with a few maths problems sprinkled on top.

As a parent, you deserve an honest guide. Not a top list sponsored by app developers, but a framework you can use to evaluate whether an app is actually worth your child's time.

The four hallmarks of a good learning app

1. Pedagogical foundation — not just pretty colours

A good learning app is designed based on how children actually learn. That means active exploration rather than passive consumption, adaptive difficulty, and meaningful feedback that helps the child progress — not just "correct" or "incorrect."

Research on learning shows that children learn best when they are actively engaged, when the content is meaningful to them, and when they have the opportunity to try and fail in a safe environment. Look for apps that build on these principles.

Check this: Does the app have clear learning objectives? Can you see what the child is actually meant to learn? If the app only says "fun and educational" without explaining what the child learns, that is a warning sign.

2. Absence of dark patterns

Dark patterns are design techniques that manipulate the user. In children's apps, this often looks like:

  • Infinite scrolling that makes it impossible to stop
  • Manipulative rewards that create dependency rather than learning
  • Advertisements disguised as content so children tap on ads without realising it
  • Purchase pressure with "ask mum and dad" buttons strategically placed in the middle of play
  • Time-limited offers that create artificial urgency

Before downloading any app, scroll to the bottom of its App Store listing and read the "Privacy" section. If it says "Data Used to Track You" with many categories listed, consider whether that app belongs on your child's device.

A good learning app respects the child's attention. It has natural stopping points, does not offer rewards that require purchases, and clearly separates content from advertising — or has no advertising at all.

3. Age-appropriate content and experience

An app for a four-year-old should look entirely different from an app for a twelve-year-old. This is not just about task difficulty, but about the entire experience: navigation, visual design, language, and the amount of text.

For young children, look for apps with large buttons, voiceover narration, and sessions under 10 minutes. If the child needs you to read the instructions every time, the app is not age-appropriate.
🌳13-16 years
Teens benefit from apps that challenge critical thinking and treat them as capable people — not just younger versions of adults. Look for open-ended tasks, debate prompts, and creative projects.

For middle years (8-12): Apps that provide more freedom to explore, ask open-ended questions, and let the child work at their own pace.

4. Privacy that actually protects the child

Children's privacy is not a bonus — it is a requirement. In the EU, children are specifically protected through GDPR, and apps that collect children's data have strict rules to follow.

Check this: Does the app have a clear privacy policy? Does it collect data about the child? Is data shared with third parties? Can you delete the child's data? If the app requires extensive personal information just to get started, alarm bells should be ringing.

Categories worth exploring

There are good apps across many subject areas. Here are some categories to consider:

  • Mathematics: Apps that make maths visual and tangible, not just multiplication drills
  • Reading and language: Apps that strengthen reading comprehension and vocabulary through stories and exploration
  • Coding and logical thinking: Block-based programming for the youngest, more advanced coding languages for older children
  • Science and STEAM: Apps that let children explore science through experiments, simulations, and creative projects
