A bird egg breathes. It has no nose, no mouth, no lungs. Yet oxygen flows in and carbon dioxide flows out through the shell, every second, entirely on its own. The secret lies in thousands of microscopic pores hidden beneath the smooth calcium carbonate surface — holes so small they are invisible to the naked eye.
How an Egg Breathes
The eggshell is a bird's first feat of engineering. It looks solid, but a typical chicken egg contains between 7,000 and 17,000 pores. Through these tiny openings, oxygen seeps inward to reach the developing embryo, while carbon dioxide — the embryo's waste gas — drifts outward. Just beneath the shell sits a thin, smooth membrane that children can feel with their fingertips if they peel a boiled egg carefully. This membrane stops bacteria while allowing gases to pass freely.
Inside, the embryo floats in amniotic fluid. Its heart begins beating roughly two days after incubation starts. And all of this unfolds while the egg sits silent and still in the nest — a closed system with gas exchange, powered by nothing more than warmth and air.
Why This Matters for Children
Bird eggs teach children that nature solves engineering problems in ways we rarely consider. How do you protect something fragile that also needs to breathe? That is a real design challenge, and birds solved it with a material thinner than a pencil.

Children collect twigs, moss, dry grass, and small leaves outdoors. They layer these materials in a bowl — stiff twigs on the outside, soft materials on the inside — then carefully lift the nest out to see if it holds its shape. A bird builds without glue and without a mould.
Using a flashlight and magnifying glass, children examine a broken eggshell to find the pores (visible as tiny light spots) and feel the membrane inside — smooth, resilient, almost invisible.
