Build an insect hotel: a backyard engineering project for kids

An insect hotel is not garden decoration — it is housing for the wild bees your garden depends on. Here is how kids build one that actually works.

The garden outside your window is full of tiny tenants you rarely see. More than 200 wild bee species live in Norway alone — and most of them do not live in hives. They live alone, in hollow stems, in rotting wood, in old mouse burrows. Exactly that kind of space is becoming rarer in modern gardens. An insect hotel is the fix — and the best part is that a child can build one.

What is an insect hotel?

An insect hotel is a structure — usually a wooden box or stack of materials — that offers a variety of small rooms and holes where wild insects can lay eggs, sleep or overwinter. Think of it as an apartment building for beetles, bees and bumblebees.

Each room has a job. Hollow bamboo tubes suit solitary bees that lay one egg at a time and seal the entrance with clay. Pine cones shelter ladybirds. Dry straw and reeds are perfect overwintering quarters for queen bumblebees. Rotting wood attracts beetle larvae that break down plant matter and feed the soil.

Most wild bees in Norway are not swarm bees — they are solitary bees. They almost never sting.

That makes an insect hotel safe for children to observe up close. But it also means these bees are especially vulnerable. A honeybee colony of 50,000 individuals can relocate if a tree is felled. A solitary wild bee that loses her nest hole loses the entire nest. Your hotel becomes the reserve she needs.

A common myth is that an insect hotel is just decoration. It is not. A well-built hotel is housing. A poorly built one is a pile of sticks. The difference is in materials and placement — which is what the experiment teaches.

Why this matters for children

In Norway's LK20 curriculum, the insect hotel is a near-perfect project. Art and crafts asks children to design and build products from their own ideas. Science asks them to explore the diversity of nature and study organisms in their local environment. An insect hotel sits squarely across both subjects — and produces results the child can watch unfold.

Children who build an insect hotel learn the engineering process in miniature: define the user, choose materials, test placement, iterate. The difference from a paper plane or a marshmallow tower is that the user here is alive. The child does not get to decide whether the hotel is good — the bees decide, by moving in or not.

When a new guest finally arrives — a mason bee sealing a tube with clay, a ladybird tucked into a cone — the child gets a particular kind of experience. Nature answered. The thing I built worked. Few things grow real curiosity for the natural world more powerfully than that.

The hotel is also a low-pressure way to talk about biodiversity. You do not need to lecture about ecosystems. You just build the house, hang it, and watch what arrives. That is learning where the child leads.

Try it at home: build the five-room hotel

Suitable for: 5–12 years. Younger children help fill the rooms; older children plan and use the tools. ⚠️ An adult helps with sawing, drilling and any sharp tools.

You will need:

  • A small wooden box or four planks (about 20 × 25 × 15 cm)
  • Hollow bamboo tubes or reed stems (cut to 10 cm pieces, open at one end)
  • A handful of pine cones
  • Dry straw, hay or reeds
  • A piece of rotting wood or mossy branch
  • String or a screw eye for hanging

Steps:

  1. Build the frame. Make a box with a roof. The roof matters — without it the hotel becomes wet and useless.
  2. Divide the box into five rooms. Use two thin sticks as inner walls.
  3. Room 1 — solitary bees: stack the bamboo tubes tightly, all openings facing outwards.
  4. Room 2 — ladybirds: fill with pine cones. The cracks between scales are ideal sleeping nooks.
  5. Room 3 — bumblebees: pack in dry straw or hay for an overwintering spot.
  6. Room 4 — beetles: add a piece of rotting wood. Beetle larvae feed on it and improve the soil.
  7. Room 5 — your choice: the child decides this room. Shells? Moss? A flat stone? Test and see who arrives.

Hang the hotel facing south, 1 to 1.5 metres above the ground, near flowers if possible.

What happens if you hang two hotels — one in sun and one in shade — and compare which fills first?

Questions to wonder about

  • If wild bees do not make honey, why do they exist at all?
  • How does a queen bumblebee know that this particular straw is safe to sleep in for the entire winter?
  • If we hung an insect hotel at every school in Norway, would it be enough to save the threatened species?
