Ask your child to draw a bicycle. Not while looking at one — from memory.

Almost every child draws a bicycle that could not roll a metre. The chain ends up around the front wheel; the frame is missing a bar.

Now the uncomfortable part: try it yourself. You probably cannot either.

We have all seen a bicycle. Almost none of us has looked at one.

What happens when you draw something you don't understand?

Drawing is a method for locating the holes in your own understanding. It works because a line cannot be approximate.

Language can be. You can say "the bicycle has a frame" without committing to a single detail: how many bars, where they meet, what holds the saddle up. The sentence passes, and everyone assumes the explanation is done.

The pencil will not accept that. The moment the line travels down from the saddle, the hand must decide where it lands. If the head does not know, the hand stops. Mid-page.

Here is the reversal: the line stops exactly where the understanding stops.

That is not a flaw in the drawing. It is the measuring instrument.

Try it at home: The Bicycle From Memory

Twelve minutes, and not a drawing lesson. You need two sheets of paper, a pencil, an eraser you promise not to use, and a real bicycle at the end.

  1. Draw a bicycle from memory. No peeking, no help. One minute.
  2. Do not correct anything. Not one word. That step is yours.
  3. Hunt for the hesitation. "Where did the pencil slow down?"
  4. Ring the gaps. Circle every place the line stopped or guessed.
  5. Go and look at a real bicycle. Not to draw — to answer the rings.
  6. Draw it once more, on the second sheet. Lay both side by side.

Suitable for: 6–12 years. The adult's only job is silence in steps 1 and 2.

The difference between the sheets is not "a better drawing". It is what your child learned today, drawn at full size — and while you hold it, you might wonder what a pencil is made of.

What happens if you try this with something you thought you knew well — a key, or your own hand?

  • Why do we remember what things look like, but not how they fit together?
  • Can you draw something you have never seen, if someone explains it well?
  • If two children stop in different places — which of them understands it better?
