The first signs of autumn arrive in August, not October — and they show up in the light long before they show up in any colour. Step outside before breakfast tomorrow and put your hand in the grass. It is wet, even though no rain has fallen. The air is cooler than it was three weeks ago. Stand still, and there are fewer birds over the rooftops than there were in July.
Here is the part that surprises most parents: autumn began on 21 June.
That is the summer solstice, the brightest day of the year. From the following day onwards, every single day is a little shorter than the one before it. By mid-August a city like Oslo has lost close to four hours of daylight compared with the solstice, and further north the difference is larger still. Your child has lived through the whole change without feeling it, because it arrives a few minutes at a time.
Trees felt it immediately. Deciduous trees do not use temperature as their main signal for winter preparation — they use day length. A tree effectively counts how long the light lasts, and when it begins to fade, the tree starts a process that ends with the leaves being shed. A warm week in August cannot fool a tree. Warmth changes the pace a little. Light sets the direction.
That makes the season an unusually good first experiment. Watch one thing every day, write down what you see, notice a pattern — which is the whole core of what STEAM learning is: pick a single tree you pass daily, and over five days record the date and a drawing, one yellow leaf, whether the grass is wet before breakfast, and the time it gets too dark to read outdoors. On day five, compare with day one and find a single thing that has changed.
When you have the yellow leaf, hold it up to a window. The yellow is not new. It has been inside the leaf all summer, hidden under the green — and once the tree stops renewing the green, the yellow is simply what remains. The leaf never changed colour. It lost one.

A child who notices that autumn began in June has discovered something much bigger than a season: that the world changes at a pace too slow to watch, and that it can still be measured. Glaciers do that. Mountains turning to sand do that. A growing child does that.
None of it is visible while it happens. All of it can be measured — with a pencil and a tree.
