From Frog Egg to Frog: What's Happening Inside the Jelly in May?

Every May, something strange begins happening in the still puddles across Norway. Large, glass-clear blobs of jelly appear — as if someone has spilled a bowl of transparent pudding into the water. Look closely, and you'll see something black inside each tiny bubble. It isn't algae. It isn't debris. Every single black speck is a frog that has just started building itself.

What is a frog egg, really?

A frog egg is a tiny frog wrapped inside its own transparent greenhouse. The wrapping isn't a hard shell like a chicken's egg — it's a clear jelly that swells up the moment it touches water. The jelly is thick enough to protect the small black speck inside, but porous enough to let oxygen seep in and carbon dioxide seep out. The little speck breathes through its entire coat.

Here's the first quiet surprise: one clump is not one egg. A single female frog lays between 1 000 and 4 000 eggs in one big jelly mass. So what you're staring at in the pond isn't one life — it's an entire nursery. And of those 4 000, perhaps five will grow into adults. The rest will be eaten by fish, birds, dragonfly nymphs, and other tadpoles. Nature is generous that way — it makes many, because few survive.

Inside each tiny bubble, something almost unbelievable happens: a black speck slowly reorganises itself into a tail, a head, two minuscule eyes. After about two weeks, the jelly bursts, and out swim hundreds of tadpoles. They have no legs. They have no lungs. They breathe through gills on the sides of their necks, just like fish. And yet — eight weeks later, they have become small frogs hopping onto land. That transformation is called metamorphosis, and it's one of the most dramatic stories in all of natural science.

Why does this matter for children?

Few experiences in childhood produce as powerful an "aha" moment as visiting the same pond three times in a month and noticing that the black speck has grown a tail — and the next week, the tail has grown legs. This is concrete natural science happening inside the child's own head, not in a textbook.

The Norwegian curriculum (LK20) asks pupils in grades 2–4 to "explore and compare different animal life cycles," and pupils in grades 5–7 to "describe relationships in ecosystems." The frog's journey is almost tailor-made for the first goal, and a perfect entry point to the second. When a child understands that the frog needs this particular puddle, this particular water, and these particular insects to survive, they have already begun to think like an ecologist.

It's also worth noting this: amphibians are vanishing faster than almost any other animal group on the planet. Children who have watched a tadpole develop with their own eyes become the future's best defenders of small wetlands — because they know what lives there.

Try at home: Start a frog egg observation diary

Suitable for: 4–10 years You need:

  • ✅ A small notebook
  • ✅ A pencil and some coloured crayons
  • ✅ A ruler or measuring tape
  • ✅ A phone camera (optional — for week-to-week comparison)
  • ✅ A magnifying glass (optional, but it adds wonder)
  • ✅ Rubber boots

Here's how:

  1. Find a still, shallow puddle nearby — preferably one that has been sitting there since the snow melted. The water should be calm. Frog eggs don't thrive in streams.
  2. When you spot the jelly clumps, note the date in your book. Draw the clump as large as it appears. Write down how many black specks you can count in a small area.
  3. Return the same week next week. Draw again. How far have the specks come? Are they elongated? Have any hatched out of the jelly?
  4. Return every week for six weeks. Each time: draw one tadpole and measure how long it is.
  5. Don't take anything home. Eggs and tadpoles are legally protected in Norway, and they don't survive in a jar. Watch, draw, wonder — and let them be.
  6. On your last visit, look for the very first tiny frogs hopping onto land. It will likely be in July or August.
