How do ants find their way home?

Ants have no GPS. They write the way home with scent, dropping invisible pheromone trails that grow stronger every time another ant follows the same path.

Imagine you are two millimetres tall. You are out in grass that towers above you like skyscrapers, and you have to find your way back to a hole that lies two hundred metres away. You can barely see. You have no map. You have never been here before. And yet — ten minutes later — you are back home with a crumb of bread.

This is daily life for an ant. How on earth does she do it?

What happens on an ant trail?

Ants have no GPS. They write the way home with scent.

On the back of her body an ant has a tiny gland. When she finds food and starts heading back to the nest, she releases minuscule droplets of a scent chemical called a pheromone every centimetre or so. We cannot see it. But for the next ant who passes ten minutes later, that smell is louder than a road sign.

The next ant reads the trail with her antennae — two small feelers stretching out in front of her head like invisible hands. She walks exactly where the scent is strongest. When she also finds the food, she lays her own pheromones on the way home. Now the trail is twice as strong. The third ant arrives faster. The fourth one too.

Here is the beautiful part: the ants never draw the trail with a pencil. They vote on it with their feet. The shortest path always gets walked most often, and most often means strongest scent. Within an hour, an entire colony has worked out the fastest route to the food — without a single ant ever seeing the full map. It is as if a swarm of small creatures is thinking together.

Imagine if your class had to find the fastest way to the cafeteria, and every pupil wore a shoe that left a tiny scent print. After a week, the quickest route would smell strongest, and new pupils would naturally follow it. Ants do this in real time, every day.

Why this matters for children

Ants are perhaps the animal children see most often and notice the least. The little ant crossing the kitchen floor in summer is no accident. She is part of a society older than the dinosaurs — and she communicates with thousands of siblings every second, completely without words.

Norway's LK20 curriculum asks children to explore and discuss animals and plants in the local environment. That sounds dry, but it is one of the loveliest invitations a teacher can offer. When a child crouches over an ant trail in the garden and really looks, they discover that the ground is full of conversations. Ants negotiate. They build roads. They solve problems. Just not with their voices.

This does something special to a child's brain. Researchers in developmental psychology observe that children who get early practice in observing small systems — ants, water films, seedlings — develop stronger pattern-recognition skills later. Pattern recognition is the cornerstone of mathematics, coding, and reading.

There is one more gift that ants give your child: an early lesson that cooperation can be stronger than intelligence. No single ant is clever. One ant cannot work out the shortest path alone. But the colony solves the problem in minutes. That is a life lesson that fits well for a human growing up in a world where the biggest tasks — climate, disease, peace — can only be solved together.

Try it at home: track an ant

You need almost nothing. Just a little patience and a sugar cube.

Suitable for: 5–10 years

⚠️ A grown-up helps find a safe spot — away from allergies or biting ant species in southern Europe.

How to do it:

  1. Find an ant nest in the garden, along a path, or between paving stones. Look for a steady, narrow "motorway" where ants are travelling in both directions.
  2. Place the sugar cube ten to twenty centimetres away from the traffic, but not directly on the trail.
  3. Sit down quietly and wait. When the first ant discovers the sugar, mark the time on your watch.
  4. Count how many ants are on the sugar after two minutes. After five. After ten. Write the numbers down.
  5. Now take a damp cloth and wipe across one small section of the trail. Do not harm the ants.
  6. Watch what happens over the next few minutes.

Which way do the ants go now? Can they find the sugar again, or do they look confused? What happens if you instead move the sugar cube to a brand-new spot — will they find it faster after they have already learned one route? Write down everything you see. You have just become a field myrmecologist.

Questions to wonder about

  • How does an ant know when to stop searching and turn for home — without being able to see the nest?
  • If no ant is the boss, who decides which food matters most today?
  • Could humans have had a scent language like the ants, if evolution had chosen a little differently?

Closing

The next time you see a small ant hurrying across the kitchen floor, remember that she is not lost. She is reading a letter that a thousand siblings have written for her — a letter of scent, laid down centimetre by centimetre, through what we think is just grass and concrete. The ground is full of invisible roads, and an ant can read every one of them.
