The holiday glow fades fast

During holidays, children are full of questions. They notice things. They wonder why the sky changes colour at sunset, why the sea is salty, why their hot chocolate cools down. But once school starts again and routines return, that wide-eyed curiosity can quietly slip away — replaced by timetables, homework, and the pressure to produce correct answers.

It does not have to be this way. Curiosity is not something a child either has or doesn't. It is a habit — and like any habit, it can be practised, strengthened, and protected.

Here are practical ways to keep the wonder alive long after the holiday suitcases have been unpacked.

Start the day with a question

One of the simplest and most powerful curiosity habits is the question of the day. At breakfast, someone poses a question that nobody knows the answer to yet. It does not need to be complicated.

  • Why do we yawn?
  • How do birds know where to fly when they migrate?
  • What would happen if the moon disappeared?

The rule is: nobody looks up the answer immediately. The question sits with the family throughout the day. At dinner, everyone shares what they think the answer might be — and then, if you like, you look it up together.

Write the question on a sticky note and put it on the fridge. By evening, you will be surprised how many family members have been quietly thinking about it.
🌱4-7 years
For young children, keep questions sensory and concrete: "Why is the banana yellow?" or "What does the wind feel like on your face?" The goal is not the answer — it is the act of wondering.

Keep a family wonder journal

A wonder journal is a shared notebook where anyone in the family can write (or draw) a question. It lives on the kitchen table or by the front door — somewhere visible. There is no pressure to answer the questions. The point is to collect them.

Over time, something remarkable happens: the family starts noticing more. A child who writes down a question about why puddles disappear begins to pay attention to evaporation. A parent who jots down a question about bird song starts listening more carefully on the morning walk.

Start a family wonder journal this week. Buy a cheap notebook, decorate the cover together, and write one rule on the first page: "There are no silly questions." See how many questions you collect in the first month.
🌿8-12 years
Encourage children this age to draw diagrams alongside their questions. A sketch of the thing they are wondering about — even a rough one — engages a different part of the brain and often leads to deeper thinking.

Change the route

Routine is the enemy of noticing. When we walk the same streets, drive the same roads, and visit the same places, our brains switch to autopilot. We stop seeing.

One of the easiest ways to reignite curiosity is to change the route. Walk to school a different way. Take a detour through a park you have never visited. Stop at a building you have walked past a hundred times and actually look at it.

Psychologists call this "inattentional blindness" — when we are focused on familiar routines, we literally fail to see things that are right in front of us. Breaking routine forces the brain to pay attention again.

Children are naturally better at noticing than adults, but even they can fall into autopilot. A new route gives their senses fresh material to work with.

💡Tip
On the new route, play "I notice..." — each person takes turns pointing out something they see, hear, smell, or feel. No judgement, no competition. Just noticing.

Protect the pause

Modern life is busy, and busyness is the enemy of wonder. Curiosity needs space — moments of boredom, of quiet, of not-knowing. When every minute is scheduled and every gap is filled with a screen, the brain never gets the chance to drift into the kind of open-ended thinking where questions are born.

This does not mean you need to clear the calendar. It means protecting small pockets of unstructured time. Ten minutes before bed with no screens. A walk with no destination. A car journey where the radio stays off.

🌳13-16 years
Teenagers need unstructured thinking time too, perhaps even more than younger children. The pressure of exams and social media leaves little room for wondering. Encourage them to keep a notes app or journal where they jot down questions and ideas as they arise.

Follow the thread

When a child asks a question, resist the urge to give a quick answer. Instead, follow the thread. Ask them what they think. Ask what they would need to find out. Ask what experiment they could design.

The question "Why do leaves change colour in autumn?" can lead to a conversation about chlorophyll. That can lead to wondering about photosynthesis. That can lead to asking why plants need sunlight at all. Before you know it, you are talking about the sun, about energy, about the food chain — all from a single question about a leaf.

What is the last question your child asked that you did not have the answer to? What would happen if you explored it together this week — not to find the answer, but to see where the question leads?

This is how deep learning works: not from being told facts, but from following one question to the next, building understanding along the way.

Curiosity is not a phase

Young children ask an extraordinary number of questions — studies suggest preschoolers may ask several hundred per day. That number tends to drop significantly as children grow older. But that decline is not inevitable. It is a response to an environment that stops rewarding questioning.

The holidays remind us what curious children look like. The challenge — and the opportunity — is to carry that spirit into everyday life.

💡Tip
When your child asks a question you cannot answer, say "I don't know — let's find out" rather than "I'll tell you later." Those five words — "let's find out together" — are the most powerful curiosity tool a parent has.
