Make a wind chime that tells you how strong the wind is

Your child thinks they are making decoration. They are making an instrument. Here is how to build a wind chime that reads the weather with ears.

A wind chime is a translator. It takes something invisible — moving air — and hands back something you can hear.

The mechanism is simpler than it looks. Wind pushes the hanging objects, they swing and strike each other, and each collision sets the metal shivering. That shivering moves the air, and reaches your eardrum as a clink. No wind, no push, no sound.

Here is the part children love: the harder it blows, the more often the objects collide. A wind chime does not just make noise. It makes a tempo. And the tempo changes with the weather.

You have not made decoration. You have made a measuring instrument.

More than two hundred years ago a British naval officer named Francis Beaufort faced the same problem on a larger scale, and his solution was as simple as your chime: do not try to measure the wind. Measure what the wind does. Smoke rises straight up. Leaves rustle. Small branches move. Each step got its own observable description, and the scale is still in use today.

One honest admission belongs here, and your child should hear it. The chime only reads the middle of the scale: below a light breeze it hangs silent, and from a fresh breeze upward it rings almost without pause, so stronger wind stops sounding different. Knowing what your instrument cannot do is not a failure. It is the craft itself.

Build it

You need a straight stick about 25 cm long, string, five or six things that ring — old keys work beautifully — and a sheet of paper with fourteen rows.

Cut six pieces of string between 15 and 30 cm and tie one key firmly to the end of each. Fasten them along the stick just a couple of centimetres apart — close enough that they genuinely reach one another. Add two longer threads as a carrying loop. An adult hangs it outside, never above a window, a doorway or a seating area.

Then listen at the same time each day and count the clinks in thirty seconds.

That first clink is not a musical note. It is a short, thin sound, like one small stone against another.

And then the question that makes the project yours: what happens if you swap the keys for corks made of wood? Guess first, write the guess down, and try it.

Questions worth wondering about

  • Why does the chime ring when the wind comes from one side, but barely from the other?
  • If wind is invisible, how did the forecast know what it would do tomorrow?
  • Is there anything in the whole world that starts moving without something pushing it?

Fourteen days from now something quiet happens indoors. Your child hears three clinks through a closed window and says "it's picked up" without looking outside. They have not only built a wind chime. They have built themselves a new sense — and that is how every kind of measurement began.
