Math apps for kids: when practice actually works

Not every math app teaches children math. Some only teach them to guess fast. Here is the difference — and what to look for before you download.

Math app for kids is a phrase millions of parents type into the App Store every year. The downloads run into hundreds of millions. The promise is simple: a child practices math on a screen, the app adapts, and learning happens automatically. Often, it does not.

Not every math app teaches children mathematics. Some teach them to guess quickly. The difference matters more than the polished graphics suggest.

What separates a good math app from a bad one?

It comes down to what kind of brain muscle the app trains.

A drill app asks many questions, rewards speed, and lets the child answer by tapping the correct option out of four. The feedback is instant — green or red. The child learns the pattern: tap fast, try again, collect stars. It feels like learning because it is busy and fun. But the brain is mostly practising recognition: which answer looks right?

A thinking app asks fewer questions. It asks the child to write the answer, or to drag blocks to build the number 24 out of two tens and four ones. It does not reward speed — it rewards understanding. When a child gets something wrong, it doesn't just reveal the right answer. It opens a small tool that helps the child see why.

The difference sounds small. It is not. Studies on math learning suggest that children who practice with active retrieval — actually producing the answer themselves — remember math far better than children who only choose between options. The brain learns what it works for.

Why this matters for children

The Norwegian curriculum (LK20) is clear: mathematics should be about exploration, reasoning, and understanding relationships — not automatic calculation speed or guessing against the clock.

But the math app market isn't built for that. It is built to keep children on the screen as long as possible. That means colors, sounds, rewards — everything that creates dopamine without necessarily creating understanding. A child can spend 30 minutes a day on a math app for a full year, collect thousands of stars, and still struggle to explain why 8 × 7 is the same as 7 × 8. Because the app never asked why. It only asked what.

Try at home: the 10-minute app test

You don't need to be an expert to evaluate a math app. You need 10 minutes and a child who helps.

You will need: a phone or tablet, the math app, your child, an eraser or empty space on the table, a little patience.

Steps:

  1. Let your child use the app normally for five minutes.
  2. Pause the app mid-question. Point at the question and ask: "Why is the answer that?"
  3. Listen. Can your child explain in their own words, or just repeat the number?
  4. Ask your child to solve the same question without the app — with a pencil or with their fingers.
  5. Check: is it just as easy without the app? Or does your child suddenly hesitate?
  6. Finally, ask your child to make up a similar problem for you. If the app has taught real thinking, the child can flip the problem.

Suitable for ages 6–12.

What happens if you try this with an app your child has used for a long time? Many parents are surprised. A child who "knows the times tables" inside the app sometimes can't explain what multiplication actually is. That doesn't mean the app is bad — it means the app is part of learning, not all of it.

Questions to wonder about

  • What's the difference between remembering an answer and understanding why it's correct?
  • If an app makes you better without you noticing — are you actually better, or only better at that app?
  • Can a computer teach you to think for yourself, or does that help always have to come from a human in the end?

A final thought

A math app is like an instrument. It can help a child practice, but it doesn't play the music on its own. The best app is the one that teaches the child to ask questions — not just to answer them.
