Number Sense Before School: Why Counting Isn't Enough

A child can count to a hundred without knowing what three means.

Number sense is the ability to know what a number actually means — that five is a quantity you can hold, split in two, and compare with four. It is a different thing entirely from reciting the counting sequence, which is closer to singing a song. That difference shapes how a child meets maths in their first year of school, and it isn't built at a desk. It's built with buttons, pine cones and socks.

What number sense really is

Number sense is the link between the number word and the quantity it points to. A child has to learn that each number word belongs to exactly one object while counting — one-to-one correspondence — and that the last word they say isn't just the last in the list, but the answer to "how many". Then comes comparing: more, or fewer?

Try this tonight. Lay five buttons in a long, spread-out row. Lay five more directly underneath, packed tightly together. Ask which row has more.

Plenty of children between four and six will say the long row — right after counting five in both.

Five buttons spread across a table simply look like more than five buttons pressed together, and for a five-year-old that isn't a mistake. It's how the eyes still read the world. Understanding that the amount stays the same when things are moved around comes only after a child has counted enough real objects by hand for the number to outweigh the picture.

Try it at home: the Five Test

You need ten identical small objects — buttons, pasta shells, bricks — and a table. Lay out the two rows and ask which has more. Then count the long row together, pointing at one object per number and nudging each aside as you go. Count the short row the same way. Ask again.

Some children flip their answer immediately and laugh. Others hold firm, seconds after counting five in both. Both answers are useful — one shows the understanding has landed, the other shows exactly where you are today. Neither needs correcting.

Then the interesting part — what happens if you arrange the same five objects in a circle instead of a row?
