A whole orange floats. Peel it, and it sinks.
Science for kids at home is not a list of facts to memorise. It is a way of meeting the world: notice something, guess what will happen, test the guess, then look at what actually happened. A glass of water and one orange is enough for all four — and the result surprises the adult as much as the child. After all, the orange gets lighter when you take the peel off.
The guess is the whole method
Science is not the collection of answers. It is the method we use to reach them: look, guess, try, look again. A four-year-old can do every step. The guess is what matters — without it, an experiment is just a trick the child watches. That is why the most useful question in home science is also the shortest: "What do you think will happen?"
The reversal
You took weight off the orange — and that is exactly why it sinks. What you removed was mostly air. The peel is thick and spongy, full of tiny air pockets — a life jacket that adds a lot of volume for very little weight. With the jacket on, the orange weighs less than the same volume of water. Take it off, and only dense, juicy flesh is left.
That is the real secret of floating: not how heavy something is, but how heavy it is relative to the space it occupies.
Try it at home: the orange test
Ages 4–10 · 10 minutes · no preparation. You need an orange, a deep bowl, water, and a towel.
- Let the child hold the whole orange and feel its weight.
- Ask: "Float or sink?" Wait for the answer. Don't hint.
- Drop it in and watch it bob back up to the surface.
- Peel it together — smell the spray, and feel how much lighter it gets.
- Ask again: "And now?" Most children say it floats even better.
- Drop the peeled orange in, and let the silence sit.
An adult should help with peeling under age five. Let the child talk first — many work it out themselves.
Then the interesting part: what happens if you put the peel alone in the water?

- If a ship is made of steel, and steel sinks — why does the ship float?
- How many times does something have to turn out differently than you expected before you change your mind?
You don't need to know the answers to do science with your child — only to say "I don't know, shall we try?" and then fetch the glass of water. Children learn more from watching an adult guess wrong than from hearing one explain correctly.
