Science for kids does not get fun by getting easier. It gets fun by getting real.
That is the mistake most of us make at the kitchen counter. We remove the hard part, explain the answer nicely in advance, turn the experiment into a safe little recipe — and then wonder why the child is finished after three minutes.
One move turns any kitchen experiment from entertainment into actual science. It takes seven seconds and costs nothing.
Ask the child to guess first, and write the guess down.
Here is why it works: an experiment where everyone guessed right taught nobody anything. The guess is the only point where the child has something at stake. When a child writes "the egg sinks" on a sheet of paper and then watches the egg rise calmly to the surface, an expectation breaks. Teachers often call that cognitive conflict — the slightly uncomfortable, very useful gap between what you thought and what you just saw.
The child does not need to be right. They only need to have meant something.
The Norwegian curriculum asks for exactly this, and it asks early. By Year 2, children should wonder, explore and formulate questions. By Year 4, it is spelled out: form hypotheses and explore them to find answers. A hypothesis is nothing more advanced than a guess you dare to write down. By Year 7, they should identify variables and gather data — change one thing at a time and note what happened.
Try it at home: three glasses and one egg
You need three identical glasses, one raw egg, salt, a teaspoon, a blank sheet and a pencil.
Fill the glasses equally with lukewarm water. Stir four teaspoons of salt into glass two and eight into glass three, until the water runs clear again. Put the sheet in front of your child and ask what will happen to the egg in each glass — then say nothing, however long the silence lasts. Let them draw three glasses and mark where they think the egg ends up.
Now lower the egg into glass one, then two, then three, in silence. Hold the sheet up against the glasses and talk about what surprised you, not about who was right. If the egg is still on the bottom of glass three, that is a result, not a failure: stir in more salt a spoonful at a time and let your child guess how many it takes.
An adult lowers the egg so the glass does not tip. Raw egg is not for tasting, and hands get washed afterwards.
When the guess is wrong
One moment decides whether this habit sticks: the second after the child sees they got it wrong. Three sentences turn it around. "Brilliant — now we know something we didn't know." "What were you thinking when you wrote that?" And, straight away while the glasses are still there: "What do you guess now?" A second guess, made after seeing something, is a revised hypothesis. That is what scientists do all day.
Guess out loud yourself, every time. A child who watches an adult be wrong at the kitchen counter and find it interesting learns something about the world that no explanation can give them.
