Screen time together: why small questions beat strict screen rules

Watching with your child builds vocabulary, conversation and understanding — not distance. Here's what actually changes the brain while the screen is on.

You know the feeling. The tablet is on the table, dinner isn't ready, and your child has been quiet for twenty minutes. A small relief — and a small dose of guilt. Shouldn't I be doing something?

It turns out the answer is yes. But it isn't switching the screen off. It's sitting down beside it.

This post is about something researchers call co-viewing, or joint media engagement — the simplest, most underrated parenting strategy in our digital everyday life. It works. And it doesn't ask you to ban anything.

What co-viewing actually is

Co-viewing is exactly what it sounds like: an adult is present while the child watches the screen, and talks about what happens. It can be a cartoon, a learning app, a YouTube video about dinosaurs. The content is not the most important thing. What matters is that there are two voices in the room.

Language-development research is consistent on this point: children who watch the same clip alongside an adult who comments and asks questions learn more new words than children who watch the same clip alone. The brain builds connections between what it sees and what it hears explained. A passive cartoon becomes a conversation — and conversations are what young brains absorb like sponges.

Here's the reversal that surprises most parents: the screen isn't the problem. The loneliness in front of the screen is. Thirty minutes with an attentive adult outperforms an hour alone with the same programme. Often by a long way.

Why this matters for children to learn

Norwegian early-years and primary education builds on an idea from developmental psychology: children learn best in interaction with an adult who explains, asks, and bridges what's known to what's new. This applies to reading. It applies to play. And it applies to the screen.

When a child sits alone with a tablet, the brain spends most of its energy keeping up with pace, sound and colour. When an adult sits beside them and says "Look, the rabbit is hiding — why do you think it's doing that?", something different happens. The child has to stop, find words, link what they see to what they already know. That is the learning.

The Norwegian LK20 curriculum underlines this through the cross-curricular theme of democracy and citizenship, and through oral skills across every subject. Children should learn to discuss content, evaluate sources and express their own thoughts. None of that happens by itself — least of all in front of a screen without a conversation partner.

It isn't about being strict with time. It's about being present while the time is spent.

Try it at home: the three-question rule

Sit next to your child. After one minute, say aloud what you see: "He's building something — I wonder what it'll be." Ask one question: "What do you think happens next?" Wait for the answer. Don't fill the silence yourself. Pause the clip halfway through. Ask the child to explain what's happened so far. After the clip, ask one final question — "What was the strangest thing you saw?"

⚠️ The hard part isn't the questions. It's leaving the pause alone. Children need time to think.

On day one, your child will probably look at you oddly. By day three, they'll start pointing at things and explaining without being asked. What happens if you try this for a whole week — especially with the same programme each time?

Questions to wonder about

  • Why do we remember stories better when we tell them to someone else?
  • What would happen if adults always sat beside children when they read — even when reading silently?
  • Is there a limit to how much a child can learn from a screen without ever talking with anyone about it?
