Sustainability in Norway's curriculum: what kids actually learn about climate

Many parents assume that "more climate education" means another subject and another textbook. Norway's LK20 curriculum asks for something quite different — and far more interesting. Sustainability is not meant to live inside one book. It is meant to live between them.

In LK20, sustainability is one of three cross-curricular themes that thread through every subject across all grade levels. Climate appears in science, yes — but also in language arts, food and health, art and crafts, and social studies. Here is what that looks like in practice, and what it means for your child.

What is sustainability in LK20?

Sustainable development is one of three cross-curricular themes in Norway's 2020 curriculum reform, alongside health and life skills, and democracy and citizenship. The curriculum defines sustainability broadly — not just as an environmental issue, but as the interplay between environmental, economic, and social systems.

In practice, this means climate is not isolated to a single seventh-grade science lesson. It surfaces steadily and quietly: in a language arts text about a mountain farmer, in a math lesson calculating water usage, in an art class working with reused materials. This cross-curricular weaving is exactly what helps children build whole-system understanding rather than fragmented facts.

Here is the slightly surprising part: sustainability content is not new in Norwegian schools. What is new is how it is taught. Previously, environmental education sat mostly in science class. Today it is the shared responsibility of every teacher. This is one of the clearest examples of LK20 shifting weight from "what does the student know" to "how does the student think across subjects."

Why this matters for children

Climate and sustainability are the modern child's daily reality — they fill the news, shape household decisions about food and waste, and describe the world the child will live in as an adult. But that does not mean the teaching needs to be heavy or alarming. Cross-curricular learning offers the opposite: many small, gentle touchpoints rather than one overwhelming lesson.

For younger children, sustainability is mostly about observing, wondering, and noticing connections — not memorising emissions data. Middle-school students start linking human activity to nature and society. Teenagers learn to weigh ethical dilemmas and think critically about information. The child grows into the topic gradually, layer by layer.

LK20 emphasises three abilities in sustainability work: seeing connections across subjects, thinking critically about information, and taking action. The third may matter most. A child who learns that they themselves can do something — sort waste, build a bird house, plant a seed mix — develops both knowledge and what Norwegian educators call handlekompetanse, the competence to act. That feeling of agency is a uniquely effective antidote to climate anxiety.

Try it at home: The sustainability trail in one room

You will need: one room (the kitchen works best the first time), a notepad and pencil, 20 minutes together, a small kitchen timer, and optionally a phone or camera.

How to do it:

  1. Pick a room and sit together for five minutes. Just look.
  2. Have your child point at five things and ask: "Where did this come from?" Write down what you can figure out together.
  3. For each item, talk about one thing: what is it made of, how far has it travelled, and what happens when you are done with it?
  4. Pick one thing you will keep longer, repair, or pass on rather than throw away.
  5. Let your child decide one small change the family will try this week — one is enough.
  6. Hang the note somewhere everyone can see.

Suitable for ages 6–13.

⚠️ The grown-up's job is to keep the conversation light. The goal is curiosity, not guilt. If your child gets worried, steer back toward what you can do, not what might go wrong.
