Ten-minute experiments: why short beats a whole afternoon

Late-summer activities for kids do not need a whole day. Two glasses of water, one drop of colour, ten minutes — and something invisible becomes visible.

Put two glasses of water on the garden table. Fill one with cold tap water and the other with warm. Let your child touch both — then leave them completely still.

Late-summer activities for kids do not need to fill a whole day to leave a mark. The best ones take ten minutes. And in these two glasses you can see nothing at all: two identical glasses, two flat surfaces, nothing moving. Yet in one of them something is happening fast enough that a single drop of colour can expose it in under a minute.

Still water is not still

A glass of water is made of an enormous number of tiny water molecules, and they never stop moving. They push, slide and shove each other constantly, in every direction. We do not see it, because the movements are far too small and point every possible way at once. What we see is only the sum: a flat surface.

Here is the turn. How fast those molecules move is exactly what we mean when we say something is warm. Heat is movement. A glass of warm water is not a glass with something extra added — it is the same molecules, travelling faster.

Which means you can make the movement visible. Drop one bead of colour into the warm glass and it is dragged outwards in every direction within seconds, curling out like smoke. Drop the same bead into the cold glass and it sinks in a thin, stubborn thread that hangs there for minutes.

Same water. Same drop. Two completely different answers.

Try it at home: the colour race

Suitable for ages 4–10. Ten minutes, and most of that is waiting.

You need: two identical glasses, cold tap water, warm tap water, and food colouring or two tea bags. An adult handles the warm water — warm from the tap is enough, it should not be boiling.

  1. Fill one glass with cold water.
  2. Fill the other with warm water — the same amount in each.
  3. Let both glasses stand perfectly still for one minute.
  4. Ask your child to guess: which glass will the colour spread through first?
  5. Drop one bead of colour into each glass at the same moment.
  6. Watch for three minutes. Do not stir.

Step four matters most. Let the guess be said out loud before the drop falls, and ask why. From that moment the child is no longer a spectator — they have something at stake.

Then leave one question open: what happens if you put one glass in the fridge for half an hour first, and run it again?
