What do first graders learn? The curriculum, explained

Norway's LK20 curriculum sets no competence goals after year one. The first checkpoint sits a full year further on — and the commonest verb is not 'know'.

Parents starting a child in year one tend to go looking for the same thing: a list of what first graders learn. In Norway, that list does not exist. The LK20 curriculum sets no competence goals after year one at all. The first checkpoint sits after year two, a full year further on.

That sounds like a gap. It is a decision, and reading the goals that do arrive makes the reasoning plain.

One stretch, one marker

The curriculum treats the first two school years as a single continuous stretch. Think of a marked hiking trail: the cairn stands at the end of the walk, not every fifty metres. Each school decides how to distribute the distance, which is why two first-grade classes nearby can be doing very different things in November and both be on track.

Across mathematics, science, art and crafts, and music, there are 36 competence goals after year two. That is the entire stock for the first two years in those subjects. Read them in sequence and something stands out.

The commonest verb in those goals is not "know". It is "explore".

The word appears in 11 of the 36. Add its close relatives — wonder, experiment, investigate, play, experience, study — and 19 of the 36 goals contain at least one of them. More than half of everything written down for the first two years sends the child out to find something out for themselves.

The very first science goal says so outright: the child should wonder, explore and formulate questions, connecting them to their own experiences. Note the last part. Formulate questions — not answer them.

Why the two-year span matters

Because what happens in year one is easier to describe than to measure, and the curriculum has drawn the obvious conclusion.

Look at any first-grade classroom. A child born in January sits beside a child born in December. Eleven months apart. For a six-year-old that is nearly a sixth of a life. Those two should not be pushed through the same doorway on the same morning, and a year-one syllabus would force exactly that.

The two-year span makes room for children to arrive at different speeds without anyone being late.

Try it at home: the curriculum on the kitchen table

Empty a drawer onto the table — fifteen or twenty mixed objects. Before anything is touched, ask the child out loud: how many different ways could this pile be sorted? Get a number.

Then let the child sort, choosing the categories without help. Mix the pile and sort again by something entirely different. Count how many ways you reached and compare it with the guess. Finish by hunting shapes: how many circles are there in a kitchen, really?

Ten minutes. Four competence goals. No preparation.
