What Actually Happens Inside a Chrysalis — And Why Does the Caterpillar Dissolve?

A butterfly chrysalis is one of nature's most dramatic secrets. It hangs silently from a branch — smooth, green, and still — and looks as though nothing is happening. But if you were to cut one open at the wrong moment, you would not find a half-formed butterfly with stubby wings. You would find a thick, golden cell soup.

Butterfly metamorphosis for kids is often described as a caterpillar "growing wings." The reality is far stranger — and far more wonderful — than that. What actually happens inside a chrysalis resets almost everything the larva was built to do, and builds something entirely new in its place.

What Happens Inside a Chrysalis?

A butterfly undergoes what biologists call complete metamorphosis — a four-stage transformation from egg through caterpillar and chrysalis to adult butterfly. Each stage serves a completely different biological purpose: the caterpillar's job is to eat and accumulate energy, while the adult butterfly's job is to find a mate and lay eggs for the next generation.

But what happens inside the chrysalis stage is genuinely astonishing.

The caterpillar spins itself into a hard outer casing of egg-white-like proteins. Then its body begins to break itself down — a process called histolysis. Muscles, organs, and tissue dissolve into a thick cellular liquid, driven by the caterpillar's own digestive enzymes. This is not a disease. It is the plan.

In the middle of this liquid chaos, a group of specialised cells survive: imaginal discs. These cells have been dormant throughout the caterpillar's entire life, like sleeping blueprints for a future the animal has not yet lived. Now they activate — and begin to build. One disc forms the wing. Another the leg. A third the antennae and large compound eyes. Everything from the ground up, in a process called histogenesis.

The result, ten to fourteen days after the caterpillar sealed itself in, is an animal that looks completely different. Four wings. Six legs. Two long antennae. An animal that can fly thousands of metres in a single lifetime.

The caterpillar and the butterfly are made of the same atoms — arranged in an entirely new way.

Why Is This Important for Children to Learn?

Life cycles are central to the science curriculum across primary and secondary school. Butterfly metamorphosis is among the most dramatic examples available: each stage looks entirely different from the one before it, and each is precisely adapted for one specific task in the animal's life.

Beyond curriculum, there is something deeper here.

Children who follow a transformation over time — day by day, without quick results — practise something that is difficult to read about: trusting that something is happening, even when the surface looks still. Waiting without interrupting. Observing without concluding too quickly.

That is the beginning of scientific thinking. And possibly something even more valuable: the ability to be comfortable with the invisible and the slow.

The chrysalis is a picture of something children understand intuitively but rarely put into words: that the biggest changes are often the ones you cannot see while they are happening.

Try at Home: The Life Cycle Booklet

Make a small life cycle booklet — the simplest project that actually teaches something about biology.

Suitable for: 6–10 years (ages 11–13 can add written descriptions and biological detail)

You will need: ✅ Two A4 sheets of paper ✅ Pencil and coloured pencils ✅ Scissors ✅ A stapler (two staples is enough)

How to make it:

  1. Fold each sheet of paper in half lengthways — you now have four half-sheets.
  2. Stack them inside each other and staple along the folded edge — you have a small booklet with eight pages.
  3. Draw one life cycle stage per spread: Egg · Young caterpillar · Large caterpillar · Chrysalis · Butterfly hatching · Adult butterfly in flight.
  4. Write one word beneath each drawing describing what the animal does at that stage.
  5. Design a cover with the butterfly's name — in most British and Norwegian gardens you will spot a Cabbage White or a Brimstone.

⚠️ Stapler: an adult should help younger children with the stapling.

What happens if you find a real caterpillar outside and place it in a ventilated box with fresh cabbage leaves — can you spot the exact moment it stops eating and seals itself in?

Does a butterfly remember anything from its life as a caterpillar — or is it as though that animal never existed?

Inside the chrysalis, the body is liquid soup. What holds the shape? What gives instructions to the imaginal discs?

Are there other transformations around us — in nature, or in human life — that look completely still on the outside, but are in fact the most important moment of all?

A butterfly landing on a flower was once an entirely different animal — one that literally dissolved in order to become what it is now. Same atoms. New form.
