An apple left on the kitchen counter looks unchanged for three days. Then a brown patch appears. A week later the skin gives way under your thumb and the smell turns sweet and slightly winey. Ask a child why food rots and the answer is almost always that it has got old and broken. That answer is not slightly wrong — it points in the wrong direction. Something is working on that apple right now. The guests are simply too small to see. You only see the meal.
Rotting is a meal, not a breakdown
Rotting is decomposition: living organisms eating an apple in tiny pieces and building themselves out of it. The decomposers are moulds and bacteria, and they are already everywhere — in the air, on your hands, on the apple skin while it still sat in the shop. They are waiting for a way in.
The first brown patch is not them. When a bruise crushes the apple's cells, an enzyme inside the fruit meets oxygen from the air, and the reaction stains the patch brown. That is the apple's own chemistry. But broken skin is an open door, and the guests are ready behind it.
Here is the reversal that tends to stick with children and adults alike: the apple is not rotting because it is broken. It is being eaten.
Moulds eat in a way nobody at a dinner table could get away with — outside in. A mould pushes hair-thin threads into the flesh, releases substances that dissolve the cells around them, then absorbs the dissolved food through the thread wall. Try it at home: the apple calendar
Take two apples from the same bag. Press a small dent into one and leave the other untouched. Put each on its own plate in the same spot, and set a bowl over the dented one. Draw both: that is day 0.
Then look at the same time every day for fourteen days. Write one line: colour, smell from a distance, and how soft it feels under a fingertip. Measure the brown patch with a ruler in millimetres. On day fourteen, lay the drawings side by side and read the row of numbers. When did the patch start growing fast?
An adult decides where the apples stand. Nobody tastes them, nobody puts a nose close to mould, and hands are washed after every check.
Then the question that makes the experiment yours: what happens if you run it again with one apple in the fridge? Guess first, write the guess down, and find out.
Every child is made of good atoms
None of the apple disappears. Its carbon, water and other atoms become mould, air and soil nutrients, and some of it ends up one day in a new apple on a new branch. A child who has watched fourteen days pass on one apple never sees a brown patch as something disgusting again. They see a meal in progress.
