Why do waves foam on the beach? The sea has its own soap

Sea foam looks like dirt but is mostly the remains of life. How proteins from algae keep the bubbles alive — and how to make it in a glass at home.

You have walked through sea foam every summer — the white bubbles left at the waterline after a wave breaks. Most people assume it is dirt, or oil, or something that should not be there.

Try one thing first. Fill a bottle with tap water, shake it as hard as you can, and watch the bubbles. They are gone before you can count to three.

So why do waves foam, hour after hour, when water alone cannot hold a single bubble?

Pure water cannot foam

Water molecules grip each other tightly. At the surface they grip so tightly that the film behaves like a stretched sheet — this is surface tension, and it is why a mosquito can stand on a puddle without sinking. It is also exactly why plain water cannot foam: the moment a bubble tries to form, that taut film contracts around it and tears it apart.

The ocean has a trick tap water does not.

The sea's own soap

The sea is full of algae and plankton. They grow, they die, and they break down — constantly, everywhere. As they do, they release proteins and fatty substances into the water. These molecules have an odd property: one end seeks water, the other flees from it. So they settle in the only place where both ends get their way — right at the surface, one end in the water, the other in the air.

There they line up like two thin layers of wallpaper, one on each face of the bubble film. A film with wallpaper on it does not tear so easily. It stretches. It survives.

So the foam at the waterline is not dirt. It is mostly the remains of life.

Try it at home: three glasses and a shake test

Fill three identical lidded glasses halfway with cold water. Leave glass one as plain water. Stir half a teaspoon of egg white into glass two — that is "the ocean". Add one drop of dish soap to glass three. Shake all three equally hard for ten seconds, set them down together, and time how long the foam lasts. Let your child guess the order first.

Glass one collapses almost before you put it down. Glass two holds its bubbles, because egg white is protein — the same thing the sea gets from its algae. Glass three wins easily, and it is worth saying why out loud: soap was designed to do exactly this. The ocean simply thought of it first.

An adult should crack the egg, and everyone should wash their hands afterwards.

Questions to wonder about

  • Why is there most foam right where the wave breaks, and not further out?
  • If foam is the remains of algae, does a lot of foam mean a lot is living in the water just there?
  • A bubble has no parts, no plan and barely any lifespan. So why does it last exactly as long as it does?
