You've seen it hundreds of times without asking. You walk out onto the balcony early one morning in May. You're in sandals. The grass is wet. As wet as after a rainstorm. But the sky is perfectly clear. Not a single drop fell from the clouds last night. Where did all that water come from?
It came out of the air.
What's actually happening when dew forms?
The air around you is never empty. It's full of invisible water molecules — tiny droplets that have evaporated from lakes, fjords, from your own breath, from the windowsill condensation of everyone who slept last night. During the day, the air is warm and stays happy holding the water. But on a cool May night, the temperature drops. The air can no longer hold all the water.
That's when the molecules start hunting for a cold surface. A grass blade is perfect — it sticks straight up into the open sky and radiates its heat straight out toward the stars. It actually becomes a little colder than the air itself. When a water molecule hits the cold blade, it sticks. Then comes the next one. And the next. After a couple of hours, a tiny city of molecules clings along the edge of the blade — together we see them as one glass-clear droplet.
It isn't rain. It's the air emptying itself onto the meadow. It's the same principle as a cold drink glass getting wet on the outside on a summer day. It didn't leak from the glass. It came out of the room.
Why this matters for children
Dew is the simplest and most poetic doorway a child can get into the physics of phase changes — the idea that the same substance can be gas (water vapour), liquid (water) or solid (ice) depending on temperature. The dew drop makes the whole theory visible on one blade of grass.
Dew also teaches children to see what they've already seen a thousand times. That's a foundational scientific habit — noticing. The adult sees wet grass and shrugs. The child who has watched dew being born will never again take a morning meadow for granted.
Try at home: Make a droplet straight out of the air
You'll need:
- An empty glass jar or drinking glass (transparent if possible)
- Ice cubes (a handful)
- A little salt (makes the ice even colder)
- A dry paper towel beside the glass
- About five minutes of patience
How to do it:
- Wipe the outside of the glass completely dry with the paper towel. Let your child feel it — it should be totally dry.
- Fill the glass halfway with ice cubes, then sprinkle a teaspoon of salt on top.
- Set the glass on the kitchen counter and wait. While you wait, you can talk about where the water actually is right now (in the air!).
- After one or two minutes — feel the outside of the glass again. It's wet now. Where did it come from?
- Best for ages 5–12. An adult should make sure the glass doesn't break.
- After five minutes, real dew droplets have formed — exactly like on the grass in the morning.
What you're seeing is that the kitchen air contains water all the time — just invisibly. When it touches the ice-cold glass, the water is "forced out" and becomes visible. What happens if you try the same trick on a hot day versus a cold day?
