The next time you swim and get a mouthful of seawater, you know it at once: salt. But why is the sea salty? The rain that fills it is fresh. The rivers that run into it are fresh enough to drink straight from the mountain. Yet the sea is so salty you cannot swallow it. What makes the sea salty?
The sea is salty because water constantly carries salt into it but almost never carries salt out again. The salt does not come from the sea itself. It comes from the rock.
When rain falls on land, it is slightly acidic. Not sour like lemon, but enough to loosen tiny pieces of salt and minerals from stone and rock, slowly, grain by grain. The water gathers into streams and rivers, and the rivers run to the sea with the invisible salt dissolved inside them. Each river carries only a little. Here is the strange part: when the sun warms the sea's surface, the water evaporates and rises as invisible vapour, completely fresh. The salt cannot come up with it. It stays behind in the sea. So fresh water flows in, fresh water rises out, and the salt is left at the bottom of the ledger every single time.
The sea only ever gets fresh water from above, and grows saltier anyway. It is like a pot of soup on the stove: the water steams away, but the salt stays, so it tastes saltier the longer it cooks. The sea has been on a low heat for millions of years.
Why this matters for children
When a child understands why the sea is salty, they understand something much bigger: that water is on an endless journey. Salt cannot evaporate with the water, and that one small difference solves the whole riddle.
