Why Children Deserve Learning Apps in Their Own Language

Language and cultural context matter for learning. Children learn best with apps built for their reality — not translated from another culture.

Open the App Store or Google Play and search for learning apps for children. You will find hundreds. Most have bright colours, energetic mascots, and promises that your child will love learning. But scroll a little further, and you will notice something: nearly all of them are made in the USA.

That means children around the world learn with American examples, an American curriculum, and American cultural references. And that matters more than you might think.

Language Is Not Just Words

When a child encounters a new concept — let us say "photosynthesis" — a great deal happens in the brain. The child connects the new word to things they already know. If the explanation is in their first language and uses examples from their own reality, this connection happens quickly and naturally.

But if the explanation is in a second language, with examples from a schoolyard they have never seen, the brain has to work double: first understand the language, then understand the concept. For many children — especially the youngest — this means they understand less, not more.

An American learning app explains the seasons with an illustration of a yellow school bus and a "fall harvest" festival. A child in Norway, Japan, or Brazil does not recognise that world.

But explain the seasons through what happens in the nature around them — how the birch trees lose their leaves in autumn, how it gets dark at three in the afternoon in December, how the first spring flowers appear — and suddenly the lesson is about their reality.

When evaluating a learning app, look at the illustrations. Do they show nature, homes, and environments your child actually recognises? Familiar visuals are not just cosmetic — they significantly lower the cognitive load of learning new concepts.

Cultural context is not decoration. It is a pedagogical tool. When children recognise themselves in what they learn, they engage more deeply, remember more effectively, and understand more thoroughly.

Local References Improve Learning

  • Science: Every region has unique natural phenomena — northern lights, monsoons, volcanic landscapes, migrating birds. These are perfect starting points for geology, astronomy, and biology.
  • Mathematics: Children bake, measure snowfall, plan hiking trips. Everyday maths becomes meaningful when it connects to their everyday life.
  • Society and culture: Local traditions, holidays, and social structures are concepts that define children's lives but rarely appear in imported learning apps.

Curricula Are Not Universal

Every country has its own curriculum, with its own learning goals, interdisciplinary themes, and values. An American app follows American standards, which are organised very differently from what children in other countries learn at school.

Norway's national curriculum (LK20) emphasises deep learning, interdisciplinary connections, and critical thinking — a structure that is quite different from US Common Core standards. An app built for one will often feel misaligned when used for the other.

This means that even when an app covers "the same" topic, the sequence, the angle, and the depth may be completely wrong for your child. A locally developed app can build content around your national curriculum from the start, so that what children learn at home actually supports what they learn at school.

This Is Not About Nationalism

Let us be clear: this is not about one language being better than another, or one culture being more important. It is about something much simpler — children learn best when they recognise themselves in the material.

A child who has grown up with snow, packed lunches, and mountain hikes has a different frame of reference than a child from Southern California. And that is perfectly fine. Good pedagogy meets the child where they are, with examples and language they understand.

This also means that children with multicultural backgrounds benefit from an app that acknowledges the daily reality they live in, while remaining inclusive and curious about the wider world.

What You Can Do as a Parent

Next time you download a learning app for your child, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Is it in your child's language? Not just translated, but written with that language as the starting point?
  2. Does it use familiar examples? Does your child recognise themselves in the images, stories, and tasks?
  3. Does it follow your national curriculum? Does it support what your child learns at school, or does it follow an entirely different structure?
  4. Was it made for your children? Or is your language just one of 40 options in a menu?

These are not strict requirements — many good international apps can be valuable supplements. But the core content, the material that builds the foundation for understanding, should speak your child's language. Literally.
