Deep learning is the principle Norway's LK20 curriculum is built around: pupils should gradually develop lasting understanding of concepts, methods and connections, within and across subjects. When the curriculum arrived, it cut the number of competence aims. Many parents read that as lowered ambition. It was the opposite. What was cut was not the demand. It was the crowding.
Here is what that looks like in practice. This is a single thread in science, taken from the Norwegian curriculum's own wording, at four different stages:
- After Year 2: wonder, explore and formulate questions, and connect these to one's own or others' experiences
- After Year 4: wonder, ask questions and form hypotheses and investigate these to find answers
- After Year 7: ask questions and form hypotheses … identify variables and collect data to find answers
- After Year 10: … identify dependent and independent variables and collect data to find answers
Read the four in a row, and notice what does not happen.
The curriculum never changes the subject. It comes back to the same sentence and asks more of it. Eight years of schooling, and the first half of that sentence stands untouched. That is not repetition because nobody thought of anything new. That is the design. A twelve-year-old identifying variables is doing exactly what a seven-year-old wondering aloud is doing — with more layers around it.
Cramming has one problem: it works. It works right up until the test, and then it lets go. Educators have long observed that meeting the same idea again, with gaps in between, builds far more durable understanding than meeting it thoroughly once and moving on. That is not surprising to anyone who has watched a child learn to ride a bike. It does not happen in one afternoon. It happens on the fourth.
But returning costs time, and time is the one thing a school day has a fixed amount of. So something had to go. Fewer topics was not a concession — it was the bill for being allowed to stay.
For a child, this means it is allowed to not be finished. A ten-year-old who still finds fractions strange is not behind. Fractions come back. So does photosynthesis, and so does democracy.
Try it at home. Find something your child made a long time ago — a drawing, an old schoolbook, a photo of something they built. Ask what they would do differently now, and do not correct anything. Then write one question they genuinely wonder about at the top of a blank sheet, date it, and let them answer in one colour. Put it on the fridge and leave it alone for a week. Next Sunday: new colour, same question, new date — and never cross out the old answer. After three colours, your child has their own cross-section: three layers around one question that was never replaced.
Every child is made of good atoms, and good atoms build outward — never over from the bottom.
