A homework help app can build learning or replace it — and the difference comes down to a single second.

It is quarter to five. The kitchen table has been quiet for forty seconds. The child is looking at a problem they very nearly have, the pencil still — and now a hand reaches for the tablet.

Those forty seconds are not dead time. They are the most valuable part of the homework.

Help versus takeover

A homework help app helps when it moves the child one step on from where the child actually is. It takes over when it skips that step and delivers the destination.

The difference is not how clever the app is. It is what the app knows before it answers.

A good teacher asks first: what have you tried? Help is useless without it — a child who has written 3 + 3 and a child who has written nothing need completely different sentences.

Most homework apps ask nothing. They take the problem — often a photo of the page — and return the answer: neatly explained, entirely correct, and entirely disconnected from what the child had already thought.

Here is the reversal: a wrong answer that arrives before the help is not a failure. It is the preparation.

Teachers find this consistently, and studies on learning agree: retrieving an answer yourself, even a wrong one, makes the correct explanation stick better than if it had come first. The guess makes the hook. The help hangs on it.

What the curriculum actually asks for

Norway's LK20 curriculum repeats one demand in mathematics, year after year. After Year 4, pupils should model everyday situations and explain their own thinking. After Year 5, develop different strategies — and explain their own thinking. After Year 6, and again after Year 7, the same requirement stands.

Four years running, the curriculum asks for the reasoning, not the answer. A page of twenty correct results with no thinking behind it is half a homework assignment — and that is precisely the half an app can deliver in four seconds.

Try it at home: the guess line

Before you open anything, the child writes one line on a sticky note: the answer they expect, or simply the first step they would try. One line, and it is allowed to be wrong.

Only then open the app. Let the child circle the point where the guess and the solution parted ways — that single point is the whole assignment, and it goes on the fridge until Friday.
