Leaf printing with kids is one of the simplest art activities autumn offers. You paint a leaf, press it onto paper and lift it off. The paint feels cold on a fingertip, and the leaf crackles if you press too hard. But the lifted leaf leaves something unexpected behind. What is a leaf print actually showing?
What happens when a leaf becomes a print?
A leaf print is a copy of a leaf's surface. Paint sticks best where the leaf is raised, so the sheet ends up with a map of the leaf's ridges.
Turn a maple leaf over and run a finger across the underside. The veins stand up like small ridges, thick near the stalk and thinner towards the edges. They carry the most paint onto the paper, so the print is darkest where the leaf was thickest.
Here is the surprise: the child thinks they are making a picture of the leaf, and the print shows its pipes. Some veins carry water from the roots into the leaf. Others carry the sugar the leaf makes in sunlight out to the rest of the tree.

Why it matters for children
A leaf print lets a child see with their hands. Art asks the question and science explains it, which is what STEAM learning means. Norway's curriculum asks young pupils to experiment with shape, colour and contrast, and to sort things by what they observe.
Try it at home: three prints from one leaf
You need a few soft leaves, poster paint, a brush or sponge, white paper, kitchen towel and newspaper. Suitable for ages 4–12.
- Cover the table with newspaper and lay the leaf underside up.
- Paint a thin layer over the whole underside, right to the edges.
- Place it paint side down on the first sheet and cover with kitchen towel.
- Press evenly from the middle outwards without rubbing. Lift by the stalk.
- Press the same leaf on sheets two and three without adding paint.
- Lay the three prints side by side. Where are the veins clearest?
Often the second or third print shows the veins best. An adult helps choose leaves from trees you know. To keep the leaves too, press them into a herbarium.
