Put a maple leaf between two pages of a thick book. Close the book. Walk away.
A week later it is something else. Bone dry, paper thin, and it crackles when you lift it. The colour has stayed.
What you made is the beginning of a herbarium — a pressed plant collection, made by the method botanists have used for close to five hundred years. But one move separates a child's sheet from a scientist's, and it is not artistic skill.
What is a herbarium?
A herbarium is a collection of plants pressed flat, dried and fixed to sheets, so they can be studied long after the plant is gone. Drying stops time: a living plant rots because it is full of water, and steady weight on absorbent paper draws that water out while holding the shape. The oldest sheets in European collections date from the 1500s.
Here is the reversal: a pressed leaf without a label is decoration. With a label it is data.
Two identical sheets. One has nothing written on it. The other carries four lines — what, where, when, who — and so it records which species grew in which place on which day. That is the kind of record researchers use to see whether plants flower earlier now than a century ago.
The difference is not in the plant. It is in the writing beside it. Which is what STEAM learning actually means: art and science are not two activities taking turns. Here they are one movement of the hand.
Why it matters for children
It hands a child the hardest scientific skill in the simplest wrapping: telling apart what you saw from what you think. "Pretty leaf" is an opinion. "Maple, Birch Lane by the post box, 7 September, found by Ida" is an observation — and the child feels the difference in their own hand.
The Norwegian curriculum asks for this in two subjects at once: sorting by observable properties, separating observation from inference by Year 7, and showing your own work through an exhibition. A herbarium folder is all three.
Try it at home: the archive on the bookshelf
You need a few plants from a walk, newspaper, the heaviest books in the house, white sheets, paper strips and a pencil.
- Pick on a walk — and say out loud where you are standing. That detail goes first.
- Lay each plant flat between two layers of newspaper, the same day.
- Stack the books on top. Wait.
- Change the paper after two or three days, so the damp can escape.
- Mount it with paper strips across the stem. Never glue the plant itself.
- Write the label: what, where, when, who. This turns the rest into research.
Suitable for: 5–12 years. An adult splits thick stems lengthways and checks that no plant is protected.
Draw the plant beside the pressed one and you get two records of one afternoon, because drawing stops where the understanding stops — or make the sheets an exhibition.
