They already know about it
If your child is over seven or eight, they have almost certainly heard of ChatGPT. They may already be using it — for homework help, for fun, or simply because their friends are. The question is not whether to have the conversation, but how to have it well.
AI is not going away. It will be part of your child's education, career, and daily life. The goal is not to shield them from it, but to help them understand what it is, what it is good at, what it is bad at, and how to think critically about what it produces.
Start with what AI actually is
Many children (and adults) imagine AI as a thinking brain inside a computer. It is not. Modern AI language models like ChatGPT work by predicting the most likely next word in a sequence, based on patterns learned from vast amounts of text. They are extraordinarily good at producing fluent, convincing text — but they do not understand what they are saying in the way humans do.

The confidence problem
One of the most important things children need to understand about AI is that it can be confidently wrong. AI models do not say "I'm not sure" when they should. They produce polished, authoritative-sounding text even when the content is inaccurate. Researchers call these errors "hallucinations" — the model generates plausible-sounding information that is simply not true.
This matters because children (and adults) tend to trust things that sound confident and well-written. If ChatGPT produces a paragraph about history or science that reads beautifully, a child may assume it is correct — when it may contain errors.

AI and homework: where to draw the line
This is the question every parent is wrestling with. If a child asks ChatGPT to write their essay, they learn nothing. But if they use AI as a thinking partner — to brainstorm ideas, to ask "what am I missing?", to get feedback on a draft they wrote themselves — it can genuinely support learning.
The distinction is between outsourcing thinking and augmenting thinking. Here are some guidelines:
Helpful uses:
- Brainstorming ideas before writing
- Asking AI to explain a concept in simpler terms
- Using AI to generate practice questions for revision
- Asking "what are the arguments against my position?" to strengthen critical thinking
Unhelpful uses:
- Copying AI-generated text as your own work
- Using AI to avoid engaging with difficult material
- Accepting AI answers without checking them
- Replacing your own thinking with AI output

Talk about what AI cannot do
It is easy to focus on what AI can do — and it can do impressive things. But an equally important conversation is about what it cannot do. AI cannot:
- Feel emotions — it can write about sadness, but it has never felt sad
- Have experiences — it can describe a sunset, but it has never seen one
- Verify truth — it generates plausible text, not verified facts
- Be creative in the human sense — it recombines existing patterns rather than imagining truly new things
- Understand context the way humans do — it can miss irony, cultural nuance, and common sense
These limitations matter because they highlight what makes human thinking special — and why developing your child's own thinking skills is more important than ever, not less.
Make it a conversation, not a lecture
The most effective approach is not to sit your child down for a serious talk about AI. It is to make AI a topic you discuss naturally, the way you might discuss the weather or what happened at school.
When you see a news story about AI, talk about it. When your child mentions ChatGPT, ask what they used it for and what they thought of the result. When AI gets something wrong, point it out together and laugh about it. When it gets something right, acknowledge that too.
The goal is to raise a child who is neither terrified of AI nor uncritically trusting of it — but thoughtfully literate about what it is and what it means.
