Go outside right now and look at the grass. Lean down, close one eye, and notice how the colour behaves. Not one flat green — hundreds of tiny shades sliding over each other. Every spring this happens: a whole world wakes up in a single colour. But why green? Why not pink, or blue, or gold? The strange truth is that the plant did not choose green at all. The plant is trying to get rid of it.
What actually makes grass green
Inside every blade of grass lives a substance called chlorophyll, and its job is to help the plant cook its own food out of sunlight. Sunlight looks white to us, but it is really every colour of the rainbow stacked into one beam. When light lands on a leaf, chlorophyll reaches out and grabs two colours in particular: red and blue. Those two carry just the right amount of energy to turn water and air into sugar. We call that whole process photosynthesis.
But what about the green? Green will not fit. Chlorophyll has no use for it, no place to put it. So the leaf flings it straight back out — and that bounced-back green is what reaches your eye. The colour we call "grass" is really the colour the leaf refused.
Why it matters
When children understand that colour is a conversation between light and the eye — not a label glued to an object — a whole way of thinking opens. Science, art and the senses connect. A child holding a blade of grass up to the sun is doing the same work as a researcher with a spectrometer.
Try it at home: find the hidden colours in a blade of grass
Chlorophyll is the loudest pigment in a leaf, but it is not the only one. Yellow and orange live in there too, quietly waiting.
You'll need: a handful of fresh grass · a small dish · 1–2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol (with adult supervision) · a strip of white coffee filter · scissors · a spoon.
- Snip the grass into tiny pieces.
- Cover it with rubbing alcohol in the dish.
- Mash gently for two minutes — the liquid turns deep green.
- Hang the coffee-filter strip so its bottom edge just touches the green liquid.
- Wait 20–30 minutes. The alcohol creeps up the paper and drags the pigments along.
- Look at the strip. Different colours travel different distances. What do you see at the top? What stayed near the bottom?
